Synopsis – The 2023 total solar eclipse and future eclipses by Terry Cuttle

Terry Cuttle is a retired engineer and a past president of the AAQ. He is especially known in the astronomical community for his interest in observing and photographing transient astronomical phenomena, comets, meteor showers, asteroid flybys, atmospheric optics and lunar eclipses but especially total solar eclipses. He has travelled to, observed and photographed many total solar eclipses. Terry has been involved in preparing communities for eclipses with special attention to the development of safe eclipse viewing instructions, assisting the Queensland government for the 2012 eclipse and the American Astronomical Society in preparation for the 2017 USA eclipse. Terry is an associate member of the Astronomical Society of Australia and a member of the International Astronomical Union Working Group on Solar Eclipses.
Terry will discuss the planning preparation for the 2023 West Australian eclipse, to redevelop the AAQ’s eclipse website and then working with the Astronomical Society of Australia to prepare an eclipse website covering the 2023 eclipse and future Australian total solar eclipses, including safe eclipse viewing instructions. Considerable lobbying was required to convince Western Australian authorities to abandon their advice of not to directly view the eclipse and instead recommend use of eclipse glasses. The 2023 eclipse was a huge event for the small town of Exmouth and excellent weather conditions made this a memorable eclipse.
Terry will then discuss the amazing smorgasbord of total solar eclipses coming to Australia over the next 15 years including the three which will occur in southern Queensland in 2028, 2030 and 2037.
