Synopsis of the Main Item: NASA’s Artemis Program will shortly see the return of humans to the Moon, this time “to stay”. The program will ultimately result in the construction of a permanently crewed lunar surface facility, likely at the lunar South Pole. What infrastructure is needed to accomplish this, what might be the human role, and what are the challenges posed by this extreme environment?
John Culton is the Associate Professor of Off-Earth Resources and Director at the Andy Thomas Centre for Space Resources formed to deliver cutting-edge research and development of technologies necessary to support extended human presence in deep space. The Centre is partnering with Federal, State, and international industry/research partners to deliver on both national and South Australian strategies to both grow the domestic space industry and transform SA priority sectors.
