Joining the AAQ

Introduction

Do you have an interest in Astronomy?

  • Want to learn more about happenings or topics in Astronomy?

  • Observe objects with the unaided eye, binoculars or a telescope?

  • Achieve some observational, imaging or research outcome through dedicated activity?

Then the Astronomical Assoociation of Queensland (AAQ) is for you!

Your level of involvement in astronomy and participation in the AAQ is up to you. The AAQ is ready to help you with your astronomical endeavours. Through the AAQ you also have the opportunity to share your interest, knowledge and results with like-minded people.

As a member you will receive an informative newsletter, and have access to other members with an extensive skill and knowledge in amateur astronomy. At Ordinary General Meetings reports and discussions on astronomical topics are combined with a main presentation on some astronomical subject.

The AAQ is based in Brisbane in the South-Eastern corner of the state of Queensland in Australia. However, we have members from across the State and welcome membership from anywhere in Australia or Internationally.

Types of Membership

  • Full membership is given to those engaged in astronomical research or contributing observational data (e.g. variable star or occultation timing measurements) to a bona fide astronomical organisation. Full membership provides voting rights and the opportunity to become an office bearer or member of the AAQ Council.
A concession on membership fees is available to holders of an Aged Pensioner Card or to full-time students under 19 years of age.

  • Associate membership is available to any individual who wishes to join the AAQ. This is the normal starting level for new members. Associate members can, upon request, be upgraded to full membership after completing two years at the Associate level. There is no cost to be upgraded.
Associate membership has no concessional discount.

  • Family membership is applicable to two or more members of a direct family. Individuals under the family membership have the same status as an Associate member.

  • Honorary membership is conferred by the AAQ Council onto members who make an outstanding contribution to the science of astronomy or to the AAQ.

How to Join

Complete a Membership Application Form and, including the related fee, present it to a Councillor at an Ordinary General Meeting or mail it to the AAQ Secretary at the Postal Address on the Contacts page.

Your membership application would usually be tabled at the next AAQ Council meeting after it is received. After being considered, and if approved, the Application would be ratified at the following Council meeting and then announced at the succeeding Ordinary General Meeting.
