AAQ Meetings
|
The AAQ holds an Annual General Meeting at the beginning of the year, usually in February, and monthly Ordinary General Meetings thereafter. The AAQ also participates in the Queensland Combined Societies meeting and AstroQuiz.
The Ordinary General meetings have a format of brief business proceedings followed by a main item which is usually a presentation by a speaker on an astronomical topic. The main item is followed by Section Director's reports and Tabling of Observations.
Ordinary General meetings:
- Held in the Main Lecture Theatre in the Parnell Building, UQ, St Lucia, Brisbane.
- Visitors are welcome. Just look for the Theatre door at left through the main entrance.
- The venue has toilet facilities for the use of visitors.
- There is free off-street parking available at the site.
- Meetings are followed (weather permitting) by night sky observing on the lawns outside.

30 members and 6 guests enjoyed the annual general meeting and lunch at the Botanical Cafe at Mt Coot-tha Botanical Gardens. The outgoing President John Salini noted four newly ratified members were in attendance, namely Chris Spencer, Keith Treschman, Tony Piccini and Ken Ingram.
The meeting noted the sad passing of Arthur Page, a founding member of the Association, and referred members to the obituary in the February Member's Newsletter.

|
With the office bearer's reports out of the way, the outgoing President John Salini had the pleasant task of presenting the AAQ's Kitty Kent Award for 2010. The Kitty Kent award recognises outstanding service to the Association and astronomy. This year it went to Terry Cuttle.
Particular projects Terry had been involved with were the planning for 2012 Eclipse education (in conjunction with STAQ) and an eclipse viewing trip, his involvement in NACAA as Convenor and his initiation and preparation of a grant application to the Community Benefit Gambling Fund.
As there were no other nominations from the membership for Council positions, the nominations arranged by the 2010 Council, as required by the Constitution, were declared elected.

John Salini then handed over to the incoming President, Jonathan Bradshaw, and presented the ceremonial red-light torch to Jonathan, noting that it was still using the same batteries installed 5 years previously! Jonathan promised to ensure that they were drained during his term!
The incoming President Jonathan had been delving through the AAQ records and had prepared a history of Council members since the founding of the Association. He noted the presence of many historical Presidents at today's AGM, and also of many former Council members. Jonathan noted the importance of John Salini's role of welcoming new members into the Association during his tenures as President, which he felt was one of the defining aspects of John's Presidencies.
Jonathan highlighted that John Salini had spent more time on Council than any other member during the history of the Association and was the longest standing Newsletter Editor.
