Combined Societies Meeting
The Queensland astronomical community is celebrating Brendan Downs' (BAS) second supernova discovery. SN2010dc Downs is located in galaxy IC 4854 and was found on 22nd May 2010. Well done Brendan! Hopefully, Brendan will present a talk at the Combined Societies Meeting on Wednesday, 23rd June at Griffith University, Nathan Campus, in the same lecture theatre as last year's meeting, that is, room N34_0.05 in the Health Sciences building (see map here or here). The agenda includes 10 minute talks by a member from each society, plus the usual raffles and door prizes; supper will be provided.
DSO Weekend, 15/16th May 2010
The May DSO weekend at Glen Aplin proved popular with 12 members and friends attending. I'm pleased to report that we were blessed with cold, cloudless skies on Friday night, while Saturday night was almost as good with dew present on equipment by about midnight. The gathering enjoyed a BBQ dinner on Saturday, followed by a Sunday morning visit to the Bramble Patch for morning tea.
The June DSO will be held at the OATS site, Harrisville (see website for directions) on Saturday night, 12th June; call Jonathan Bradshaw or Allan Cooney if the weather is doubtful. OGM & BFN, 19th June 2010.
The June OGM will be held in Room 222 in the Parnell Building, St Lucia campus, UQ. The Main Item will be a talk by Dr Brad Carter (USQ) on some exciting developments for Mt Kent Observatory. The BFN observing session will be held after the meeting, weather permitting; a variety of telescopes will be available for viewing. If the sky is clear and there is a good chance of observing, I shall ensure the OGM is completed in time to allow for an orderly setup of equipment at the observing site. Do not hesitate to bring a portable telescope or binoculars if you have them; the plan is to set up telescopes in a park (BCC lists it as Munro St Park) bordered by Coleridge St and Carmody Rd adjacent to the campus. During the meeting, Tony Dutton will provide a summary of observing targets; experienced and inexperienced members & guests will be catered for. The May BFN proved very popular with 19 people gathered at the observing site in Munro St Park. Members who want the AAQ logo stitched on their favourite clothing, please remember to bring their shirts, vests, etc, to the April OGM and arrangements will be made for application of the new AAQ logo.
After the OGM (and before the BFN observing session), there is free tea, coffee and biscuits in the tea room behind Lecture Room 222; the library will be available at the same time. Parking is free on Saturday afternoon/evening, but please avoid using specific sites that require a permit; see the campus map on the website for suggested parking sites http://aaq.org.au/cms/index.php/activities/meetings.html.
Membership
Thank you to those members who have recently renewed their membership. Geoff Biggs will provide more details at the OGM, and will introduce any new members. We have a member renewal that was paid anonymously on line and consequently, we cannot identify who has made the payment. Please remember to identify your payment online so Tim knows which member has paid.
